I like a good apple pie myself. I'm in favor of a nice chunk of cheddar cheese on the side.

What are your favorite pies? (plural because no one should have to pick just one)

She insisted on sorting her animal crackers, which seemed like a harmless enough childhood quirk, even when she kept putting aside all the sheep for later. When her parents found a stash of them, very stale though not yet mildewed, under the bed, she became inconsolable at the thought that they would throw the inedible treats away. The cookie sheep had to be saved up in sufficient quantity to count as a good sacrifice, they were informed in dire tones, and neither of them had yet worked up the courage to ask to whom she intended to sacrifice them.

Weekly reading journal for march 11 2025

I am! On! Vacation! Muahahahahaha.

(Happy 11th of March to the few, the happy few, Due South fans out there!)

What I Have Read
Apparently, Sir Cameron Needs to Die by Greer Stothers - I finished this is a fevered rush on a plane, so take my review with a grain of salt. This was fun, it was sincere, it was unpretentious, it was a good time! I wish there had been a little more substance to the ending as the emotional core of Cameron's journey, but I am not upset by it! I did call the main revelation but not all of it! And I'm not sure what I would recommend this book for, exactly, but I had fun.

Chivalric Academia by OldShrewsburyian This fic! Is a delight! The writing is just a pleasure to read - funny and clear, gently ironic and sincere by turns. It's a Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth modern day academic AU where they are both new faculty at a small college. She hates him, he gets his handcut off, they fall in love. Brienne is written with such absolute conviction and commitment, Jaime is always dancing between hiding in the shadows and baring his soul in stupified awe of her. Wonderful, go read it especially if you like Dorothy Sayers. https://archiveofourown.org/works/57674458

Daniel Molloy's Incredible Showstopping World-Famous Model Train Extravaganza for Children and Easily-Awed Vampires (Please Knock) by
Ariaste - I read this bc Ariaste is now posting the sequel as a weekly fic. Its wonderful and porny and like Chivalric Academia, involves people who want to be together figuring out how to make it work.

What I'm Reading
Sword Heart is still slow because it is so so sweet and tender.

What I Will Read Next

The fog muffled sounds like cotton batting, until only the hum of the electrical lines gave any sense of space or time. As people stepped out into the gray morning, they found themselves rendered mute as well, farewells to family and greetings to carpooling coworkers tapering off into nothing. Most hurried back indoors, coughing to clear the fog from their lungs, but some remained outdoors, enjoying the quiet, even and especially their own.

Book rec

I've recced this series before, but I think it's appropriate to rec it again for International Women's Day.

Hell's Library Trilogy

I borrowed this series from my local library and liked it so much that I bought the series. I think it's time for a reread. :)
mific: (Heated rivalry)
[personal profile] mific
[personal profile] princessofgeeks posted about Rachel Reid having said that Shane has "the Hero's Journey", in the Heated Rivalry books.
And [personal profile] raven commented, agreeing and saying that Shane grows and changes more, internally.

I've been thinking about this, and I started to write a comment but it got so long I decided to post here about it.

I re-read the start of Heated Rivalry—it's a flash-forward prologue to the hookups era and focuses on an after-game hookup, with the overall theme being Shane's dilemma where he's desperate for the hookups (with hints at his feelings for Ilya that he's massively suppressing), his denial about being gay (seeing it as an aberration he's too "weak" not to give into), and his rationalizations about just not having found the right woman yet. He's conflicted and miserable despite the scene being hot.

Then by the end of the book, Shane and Ilya are opening the Irina Foundation, and Shane has fully accepted being gay and loving Ilya. So the external barriers (the NHL's and hockey culture's homophobia, being closeted, not living together) are still there for them both, but Shane has made the internal Hero's Journey of battling against being gay (his internalized homophobia) then overcoming that and accepting it, and accepting his love for Ilya. Ilya battles against acknowledging that he's falling in love (a lost cause from early on), but he's clear about his sexuality from the start, and he's accepted his feelings for Shane by the tuna melts scene, whereas Shane's not there yet.

The Long Game might be seen as a bit more Ilya's Hero's Journey as he starts with many problems—loneliness as he's just moved to Ottawa, having to be on a poorly-playing losing team, still not seeing enough of Shane—and he gets depressed, which he has to battle against. Like (eventually), therapy, medication, being honest with Shane about how much he's struggling, finding friends in the Centaurs and a family in the Hollanders. But the terrible "wait until we retire to come out" plan is still hanging over him (over both of them), largely due to Shane's fear of exposure and change, and as Ilya is still afraid to be honest with Shane about how much the terrible plan makes him suffer.

So then there are two external deus ex machina events that force the "wait until we retire" plan to collapse—the Tampa plane near-tragedy, and the fanmail outing. Both of them energize Ilya to fight back (the near crash makes him rally his team and win games, and to move things along with Shane as he'd finally been honest about his pain in the cathartic row beforehand), and then the fanmail outing is actually what Ilya needs to move their relationship into the light. All this doesn't solve Ilya's tendency to depression, but he gets a lot better at handling it. He learns to manage the dragon, rather than killing it.

There's still a Hero's Journey for Shane in The Long Game though, which I missed initially as the book seems so Ilya-focused. This time it's Shane's fear of coming out of the closet and being exposed, which he's way more afraid of than Ilya is—again, Ilya has real issues to battle with (even his depression can be seen as an external antagonist as it's partly biologically driven and recurs despite psychotherapy and meds), but Shane's big challenge is once more internal. He's terrified of being outed and of losing hockey and being shamed and reviled by the world. It's his intense need for privacy and his internalized homophobia that he has to combat—and in initially not doing so he hurts Ilya (but Ilya conceals that hurt from him until their big fight). The fight and the Tampa plane near-crash wake Shane up and move him along a bit, but he's still delaying their coming out as he's so afraid of it.

Then the fanmail outing is the final blow that means he can't hide anymore (to Shane's horror, but to Ilya's secret relief). So that's his big hero's test in this book (where realizing he was gay and choosing Ilya over 'performing straightness' was his big battle in HR). And the scene where Shane stands up to Roger Crowell is his "battling the dragon" moment, where he fights for Ilya and for himself, defies Crowell who represents homophobia and the potential loss of hockey, and finally, finally, Shane fully chooses Ilya rather than prioritizing hockey and maintaining his straight public persona.

He's afraid that being exposed will mean his reputation will be destroyed, that he won't be seen as "good"—and that happens to some degree, but he finds it's survivable. It's shown in the way he doesn't arrange any extra chairs at his wedding to Ilya at the end of TLG after they've been outed. He doesn't think many guests will come now that he's not "good" anymore in a black & white, all or nothing public image sense. But his friends do come, and Shane finds there's a place he can exist in between being perfect and being reviled. It's a more adult, integrated sense of self.

I suspect Shane will once again have a Hero's Journey in the pending 3rd book in the HR trilogy (Unrivaled). What will that be? I wonder if it might be Shane's retirement from playing hockey in the NHL and what comes after? He was terrified of coming out because he thought it would mean losing NHL-level hockey, but he survived that in TLG after battling Crowell, emerging still playing NHL hockey with Ilya on the Centaurs. Inevitably, he and Ilya will age out of playing NHL hockey and it will definitely be more of a challenge for Shane than for Ilya. Ilya already prioritized Shane over hockey when he moved to the Centaurs—I wouldn't be surprised if he retired first, in Unrivaled, with both of them having to deal with that as a precursor. There's an excellent fanfic about that (can't recall the title!) which I imagine Rachel hasn't read, as most authors don't read fanfic of their books especially with an a ongoing series, to avoid accusations of copying.

But for Shane, hockey is still a huge part of his sense of self. He's going to have to figure out who he is when he's not an NHL player anymore. I suspect Rachel might bring in external factors again to move him along in his battle against retiring (as otherwise I suspect he'd put it off for way too long)—like a major injury or an accumulation of smaller injuries. There might also need to be another big goal for him to switch focus to as well, something to give his life meaning after retirement, to answer the question: "who am I if I'm not playing pro hockey?" A dad? A coach? It'll be interesting to see.

I'm so impressed by friends who post long rec lists - I can barely keep up with reading a few WIPs and some random other recs here and there!

Partly as I'm trying to finish editing a podfic for the Podfic Big Bang (not HR, sorry, I'm still daunted by Ilya's accent but I'll get there eventually), and am also writing a HR AU and outlining another largely epistolary HR fic. And doing some art. Agh!

Anyway, before I forget - this one is great! Partly a social media fic and with a great premise, clever and funny - some explicit texts between Ilya and "Jane" go viral as the internet can't believe how bad at sexting Jane is. I'll Be Jane by gurlsrool.

Also this HR vid is great! Fine Not Fine

It seems that some people were inadvertent overachievers on Sunday, and they did not so much "Spring forward" as "launch wildly into the future." Temporal anomalies have been detected at houses that also experienced sudden and mysterious disappearances, so investigators believe the missing people have catapulted into some as of yet undetermined date. While further study will continue, we may have no choice but to wait until we get to the future as well to reunite with our lost neighbors, hoping all the while that they are making it nice for us.

[personal profile] scrubjayspeaks
Well, no real improvement over last week, except that I didn’t have to work Saturday again. In addition to my actual job, which is in high gear at the moment, I also still have a project in which I had to repair the tool, set up the press, and create the automation programming on two systems, despite not working in any of the departments who should be responsible for those things. And my quadruple salary will kick in aaaaaaaaany day now, I’m sure.

Now the tractor is having issues again. I need all vehicles to sToP bReAkInG~~~!

Hot in the day, freezing at night. Gotta love March...

Lewisia: 5 new pieces written, so I’m one short of being caught up, queued all posts for March

Day job: 45 hours

Cooking: discard double chocolate cookies (delicious, though I would like them to stay chewy longer), copycat KitKat bars (which are nothing at all like KitKats, more like millionaire shortbread, interesting but I would like to tweak a few things)

Gardening: weed whacked in the field again to take the seed heads off the foxtails, garden club post

Reading: Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett (a little difficult to track in audio form at times, but don’t worry, its ability to wrench at my heart remains undimmed ;_;)

Watching: The X-Files season one, episodes 11 and 12

Listening: Destination Heaven by Euphoria Again & Dogwood Tales (heard “Candy” on KEXP and wanted the album, melancholy country, gotta love all that slide guitar)

Playing: oh no, stop telling me about Pokopia, it sounds perfect for me, I don’t *want* to spend $500+ on a new system *sob*

Aftermarket Parts: in random markers in time, hit my 1000 days on T *\o/*

Clock Mouse: 76 minutes of planning work

I've been busy over at [community profile] romancingmcshep and getting a last-minute story finished and posted for it.

You can check out this year's entries Here

I've also been working on my [profile] 5soulmate prompts. I finished the ones for touching your soulmate feels good and touching your soulmate lets them feel what you're feeling.

In both cases, I thought I was working on you can only touch your soulmate and by the time I was finished, realized they fit the other prompts better. Oh well. Progress at least.

The [community profile] fandomtrumpshate auction caught my attention this year, too.

And just a few minutes ago, [community profile] sga_saturday posted the prompts for this month. History and/or Reading.

I'm waiting to see the story where Rodney is reading Atlantis slash fanfic aloud to John. Oh, I know there are stories out there like that, but whose to say we can't have more?

(and if anyone has the links to those stories, please share.)

I almost forgot to add Shore Leave! A big thanks to [personal profile] sgatazmy for posting about it on her journal. I've made plans to go with [personal profile] goddess47 as my partner in crime. I am so EXCITED!

Botswana shows how smarter cattle herding can save lions, reopen ancient wildlife pathways

More than a decade later, the situation is radically different. The lion population has rebounded. Cub survival rate is up. And cattle losses are dramatically down. It’s the result of years of hard work: restoring traditional herding practices, collaring and tracking lions, and, most recently, establishing a market for ‘wildlife-friendly beef.’ This serves as a model, wildlife advocates say, for other parts of southern Africa where modern grazing practices have collided with big cats’ appetites.

This bit about naming the lions also got a laugh from me which I know I shouldn't have 😅 but it's very in line with my spiteful tendencies: As conflict persisted, some people gave them rough names like Kufakuduze, which means, ‘If you come for my cattle, I will find you.’ I hope Kufakuduze is alive and well.

People often accused her of carrying potions and poisons in the little vials strung along her belt, half hidden by the fall of her foliage. The dryad didn’t usually bother to explain herself to the sort of people who said such things, but it still hurt. She had gone to a lot of trouble, after all, to source antidotes to the poison of the tree that birthed her, just so that she could heal anyone who suffered ill effects after being kind enough to get close to her.

Reading Journal for March 6 2026

What I’ve Read

And Other Poison Devils by Twig (https://archiveofourown.org/works/77727411) This one requires a little explanation.
So, last October, AMC did a new show in the Anne Rice cinematic universe that they’ve been building with Interview with the Vampire and The Mayfair Witches called, in full, Anne Rice's Talamasca: The Secret Order. I don’t recommend it – the show is weirdly heterosexual for a Rice-inspired tale,  and for a spy story. They really do not delve deeply into the implication of having an untrained telepath as our main character. The show is so generic they literally named the main character Guy.

But! To you, dear reader, I am kinder than to myseI am a completionist and also a Bill Fichtner fan, so I watched Anne Rice's Talamasca: The Secret Order. It’s not great. It spends a great deal of time setting up Guy, and then all the payoff is for other characters who were introduced somewhat haphazardly.  However, the extremely specific Guy has some great slashy scenes with The Vampire Jasper – it’s classic handsy male actors making intense eye contact from four inches apart, and it appealed to enough people that there is a little fandom built up about it, myself included. THIS FIC is fantastic – it picks up a number of threads the show dropped and weaves them into a compelling personal narrative of a young vulnerable man who falls into the hands of a powerful older man and dedicates himself to his cause – and of course, unlike the canon, it’s well written and they fuck. Great work, Highly recommend as well Twig’s shorter work, The Hunter and the Gun (https://archiveofourown.org/works/75005866) which is closer to canon and also deeply fun.

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik – The final book in the Scholomance series, about how the main character takes down magic capitalism from the inside. It’s wonderful payoff on the world building of the series, and good character work, and my god, Maw Mouths are just so much more horrible on the re-read than they are the first
