As promised, I am running a mid-year Venom fest in the lead up to World Chocolate Day, July 7 2022.

This is a Harlequin challenge

That is, you must riff on a blurb from a Harlequin (or similar) romance. You can interpret the blurb you've chosen any way you like, from a straight re-write of the story with Venom characters, through to the wildest thing you can think of. As long as it has Venom and/or Eddie Brock as a main character (but they don't have to be in the romantic scenario), you're good to go.

From Saturday 21 May, you can add prompts as comments on this post, or to the V:LTBC AO3 community, to help inspire people with all the awesome Harlequin blurbs you have found:

So, the last year hasn't been so great for me, but all the more reason for some seasonal shenanigans, am I right?

So I'm happily announcing this year's holiday gift exchange for fanworks in the Venom fandom.

Prompts for both the Venom movie-verse and comic-verse are accepted, and gifts can be fanfiction, fan art or fan vids. Fanworks should include Venom and/or Eddie Brock, but can include any other characters in the 2018 Venom film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and/or the Venom comics.

Sign-ups will be accepted between 12 September and 5 November, 2021. Assignments will be sent out by 8 November.

Completed gifts are due 10 December, 2021.

You can make a claim in two ways:

Put the number and title of the claim you’d prefer in your comment or email along with your handle or name.

You can list up to three of the Big Bangs. However, you don’t have to choose three, if there’s only one you want.

The Rules for Claims

I will be granting claims as follows:

First come first served. I will do my best to check posting/emailing dates and grant the claim to the first person who asks for it (once claims have officially opened).
If someone has already claimed your first request, I will move down your list and compare your second and third requests to timestamps for any other requests, and give you the first one that is still unclaimed.
Once you have one successful claim, I will hold off until all the requests have been processed before checking if you want a second claim.
If you don’t get any of your three preferred claims, and are happy to get any claim, add “Okay to be given any claim” as a fourth point on your list. I will then assign you any available Big Bang.
Once you have received an email or reply from me with confirmation you have the Claim, please sign up to the VBB AO3 Collection if you have not already done so.

As the discussion continues, Eddie, Venom, and Dan talk about what nutrients Venom needs and all decide to figure it out.

Hi all,

Just a quick update about the planned celebrations for Venom 2. As you probably all know, the release date has been pushed back to 25 June 2021. The film also has an official title now - Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

As the Big Bang is already underway, I'm going to continue it exactly as planned. However the other celebrations will be pushed back into next year.

Bingo: I'll officially set new dates on the masterpost, but the final deadline for entries will be the week before the film opens. You're welcome to post bingo entries any time you're ready between now and then.

Fiction Exchange: I'll see if there's still interest for this in the lead up to the release date. Sign ups would likely be around March 2021 if I run it.

Prompt fest: This will kick off about two months before the movie opens, around April/May 2021.

We're just about at the first check in for the Venom Big Bang. This is for primary creators to give me an idea of whether they will be ready for claims on 1 June. You need to have a draft that is 80% complete by then in order to take part in the claiming process (here are the full rules).

Welcome to Venom 2 bingo!

Join us to celebrate the upcoming release of Venom 2 by creating and sharing fanworks of any type based on the Venom movie-verse.

Edited to add: New dates have now been set due to Venom: Let There Be Carnage being rescheduled to 25 June 2021.

To play, you need to generate a bingo card, and then create a fanwork for each square until you achieve a Bingo. The fanwork can be of any type -- fic, recs, art, meta, cosplay, playlist, etc. It must feature a character from the movies Venom or Venom 2, but can include other characters from the larger Marvel-verse, including the comics. Add your work to the Venom Bingo collection on Ao3, and link it here so others can find it.

Please note that if your entry does NOT include Venom or Eddie Brock, you can only add a link to it as a comment on this Bingo Post in the

symbrock community. If your work DOES include Venom and/or Eddie you can both link it here and also make your own post in the

This one isn't Symbrock specific. Choose the "Fanfiction Cliche" option from the menu, and then 3x3 for the card size and generate your card. HTML code is created that you can paste to your journal or Tumblr or AO3 in order to display your card, and then modify it to link to the fanworks you make.

Claiming is via the honour system. If you think your fanwork fits the prompt, you can claim it, as long as it is a completed fanwork made for this challenge that celebrates Venom. The prompts are open to interpretation, so for instance, "space" could be Venom's backstory as an alien traveller, or Eddie's need for personal space, an adventure they take into cyberspace, or icons that make use of space aesthetically, and so on.

Here is the low-down on our upcoming Venom Big Bang. Thanks to everyone who took the poll. It was super useful!

Feedback is very much appreciated! This is my first time running a big bang, so I'd like the rules to be as clear as possible.

VBB Schedule

March 1 - Sign ups for Primary Creators, Secondary Creators, and Beta Readers are open.

May 1 - Primary Creator check-in (mandatory).

June 1 - Rough drafts and claims information are due. They must be 80% complete, with remaining sections outlined, in order to be accepted. Final day for Primary Creators to drop out without penalty.

June 8 - Claims summaries will be emailed to Secondary Creators to preview.

June 13 - Claims Day 1 - Claims open to registered Secondary Creators at 10am Perth time. Team introduction emails will be sent out as people are assigned and teams are confirmed.

June 14 - Claims Day 2 - Public claims open to anyone interested at 10am Perth time and continue until all summaries have been claimed. Successful claimants need to sign-up on the Ao3 once their claim is official.

July 31 - Team check-in (mandatory). Teams must have communicated by this point and alerted the mod as to any problems. Failure to check-in may disqualify you from the challenge. Pinch-hitters will be assigned as needed.

September 6 - Final check-in (mandatory). Secondary Creators, you must upload your rough drafts at this point. Primary Creators, your final draft is due today. You may continue to edit your work between now and your scheduled posting date, but what you submit must be a complete draft and meet the required minimum length in your chosen medium with no remaining outlines.

September 13 - Posting Schedule released.

October 1 - VBB posting begins on Ao3!

October 15 - Final day of posting. Open posting day for teams who missed their scheduled date & solo posts.

October 18 - Masterlist is posted, plus treats and remixes inspired by the Big Bangs can now be added to the Ao3 collection.

Okay friends,

Based on your poll responses, here's what I'm thinking we'll do to celebrate Venom 2. I'd really like your feedback.

There are four fests:

A non-traditional Big Bang, which would open for sign ups very soon and post in October
A bingo fest that would start soon and hum along until October
A fanworks exchange that would sign up around July and post in October
A prompt fest right around when the excitement for the movie starts, and running through October

The rules for the Big Bang will mostly be based on the rules for the DeanCas Big Bang, because that is a well-oiled machine. But!!! I'm not a huge fan of making everything fiction-centric, so instead, I propose that we'll have a primary creator who starts the project, who will then be matched up with a remixer/illustrator/podficcer who will expand on the primary creator's work.

So a final Big Bang that's posted could be, for instance:

two stories which riff off each other, or
art and a vid on the same theme, or
a story and art/vid (the traditional pairing), or
a story and a podfic
etc.

I think this will work, but only if people are willing to give it a try. Before I go ahead with this idea, I'd like feedback, please. Would you be willing to sign up for a Big Bang like this, that isn't the traditional story/art combo?

Hi all,

If you're not aware, there's a fest called

space_swap that focuses on space-themed fandoms which is now open for sign ups. I made sure to nominate the Venom movie, and the fest is open to different kinds of fanworks. I took part last year, and it was well-run and good fun.

The profile with instructions is here, and the tag set is here. Sign ups close in a week, on 1 March.

And speaking of fests, I'm still thinking about the schedule we're going to have in the lead up to Venom 2. If you haven't taken the poll yet, you still can. It's over here. I'll likely run at least one low-key fest and one more formal event/exchange, but may run more, if there's enough interest. I plan to spread them out a bit, with some finishing just before Venom 2 opens in cinemas.

This is the promised prompt post for our Venomtime's Day fest.

You can find the fest's rules here, and the AO3 collection here. The deadline to submit a fest entry is midnight 13th February GMT.

While there's no official sign-up for this fest (just post to the collection when you're ready), if you're like me, sometimes it's useful to have some prompts for inspiration. This is the place to post prompts for the fest.

The rules

You can post two kinds of prompts here:

A link that goes to a letter on your own journal/tumblr or whatever, which explains something you want in a bit of detail. This could be particularly useful for things like a songvid, where you might have a favourite song that you would like vidded to the Venom movie and/or the comics and you want to explain why. Another example might be if you are looking for a collaborator for a project for Valentine's Day -- say you are looking for a fic of the right length to podfic. The point of the letter is that it gives you a bit of room to explain what you're looking for and why, and gives you the option of screening comments if you're looking for a secret collaborator for your project and that kind of thing.
A short prompt here in the comments on this entry with one request in it. This is for if you have a particular craving for a story, piece of art, themed rec list, meta topic, etc, and you can easily get it down in a single comment.

You can leave up to three prompts or one link to a letter before posting anything to the fest collection. To be able to post further prompts, you need to post at least one gift to the collection -- that gift doesn't need to fill a prompt or letter on this post. Once you've posted a gift, you can post up to three more prompts. I doubt anyone would want to post more than one letter, but you can once you submit a gift to the collection if you really want to.

You can post prompts or letter any time from now until 13th February.

The focus should be on Eddie Brock, Venom, and/or any combination of Eddie and Venom, but it's also okay to ask for them in combination with other characters from the comics or movie.

As Venomtime's Day was so much fun last year, I'm running it again this year.

When is Venomtime's Day being held?

Saturday 1 February - collection opens for submissions.
Thursday 13 February - submissions are due.
Friday 14 February - works in the collection are revealed.
Friday 21 February - works can be crossposted anywhere else you like.

How do I participate?

Create any type of fan work (meta, fic, vids, art, cosplay, playlist, etc) as long as it focuses on Eddie Brock and/or Venom from the film or comics, and post it to the Venomtime's Day collection on the AO3 by midnight GMT on 13 February. Your post will be hidden until the 14th February and revealed on Valentine's Day.

There are no sign-ups for this collection

Unlike some other exchanges, the fanworks are not done to fill a prompt by someone else. This is a chance to share your work as a gift to the whole Symbrock community. That said, prompts/requests or a Dear Venomtime's Day Letter can be posted to the Symbrock Dreamwidth community during February to help inspire people.

When are the gifts revealed?

On 14th February, at around 12 noon GMT, and announced on the Symbrock Dreamwidth community.

Hi all,

A reminder about the Venom Holiday Exchange, and a clarification of the rules.

You can sign up with prompts or offers for any character or pairing or moresome you like. The only rule (to make sure we can get matches) is that one of the characters has to be Venom and/or Eddie.

Want a Carlton Drake story? No probs, just make sure it also has Venom trapped in the lab, or Eddie investigating the Life Foundation, or set it after the film (or comics), and have a resurrected Carlton chasing Venom.

Want a story about Anne and Dan? Easy, just include a nosy Venom wanting to know what Annie sees in Dan, or wanting to pick Dan’s brain about human anatomy, or Dan wanting to examine Venom.

The options are endless!

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long radio silence. Once uni starts, it's flat out with no breaks until I go on holidays again. Such is the modern era of online classes as well as face-to-face ones.

Anyway, it's just about time to start signing up for fests, but I'm woefully out of the loop. So I thought maybe it would be a good idea to have a post where we can all share links for Venom-related exchanges as we come across them.

Please post links in comments to any fest/exchange that is open to Venom fan works -- fic, vids, art, or anything else. They can be Christmas or seasonal themed, or just ones that are happening over the next few months.

Hi all,

We've had a couple of posts promoting other communities recently. Technically they don't fill the charter for

symbrock as they are not fanworks about Eddie and/or Venom, even if they are open to Venom related fan works.

So, do you want them? Are they useful content to you, or should I be using my Moderation button and deleting them?
