Symbrock Bingo January
Jan. 14th, 2019 05:34 pmHi all,
Now that our holiday fest is over, I thought we might have a bit of fun for the rest of January with a game of Symbrock Bingo. ETA: I'll wrap this up on Sun 3 Feb, unless we decide we need a bit longer.
To play, you need to generate a bingo card, and then create a fanwork for each square until you achieve a Bingo. The fanwork can be of any type -- fic, recs, art, meta, cosplay, playlist, etc -- as long as it focuses on Eddie and/or Venom and fills the prompt on the square.
ETA: The generators below have word prompts which are randomly assorted into a 3x3 card, and some of the words are not safe for work, but aren't any higher than an M rating. You can regenerate the card until you get one that is SFW if you want to.
You can choose one of these two generators to get a card:
The 3x3 Symbrock Bingo generator I just created: https://mfbc.us/m/n7peun
For this one, you'll need to screencap your card in order to re-post it, but it has Venom-specific prompts, mainly focused on the movie, but mostly also relevant to the comics.
OR
An Owomoyela > Fanfiction Cliche Bingo community prompts (choose 3x3): http://an.owomoyela.net/fun/bingo_generator
This one isn't Symbrock specific. Choose the "Fanfiction Cliche" option from the menu, and then 3x3 for the card size and generate your card. HTML code is created that you can paste to your journal or Tumblr or AO3 in order to display your card, and then modify it to link to the fanworks you make.
ETA: Claiming is via the honour system. If you think your fanwork fits the prompt, you can claim it. The prompts are open to interpretation, so for instance, "space" could be Venom's backstory as an alien traveller, or Eddie's need for personal space, an adventure they take into cyberspace, or icons that make use of space aesthetically, and so on.
The first person to get a Bingo wins bragging rights. ;) There may be another prize as well, but I haven't thought it up yet. Suggestions?
Go forth and Bingo!

Is there a general etiquette about completeness and being able to check off a space?
Re: I've never done one of these before
Date: 2019-01-15 06:54 am (UTC)We have until the end of January, which is when I'll do the wrap-up and master post and hand out bragging rights. That's why I set it as 3x3 cards, as 3 fanworks in three weeks is doable. I may do another amnesty week once we get to the end of Jan if I've misjudged how much time we'll need though -- we'll see. I'll make that a bit clearer above.
However, if you take a card and then make something after we move on to our next game, you can still totally post the fanwork here on the symbrock community and claim the bingo, even if it takes you all year. It just won't be on the master post if you do that, but I'm aware everyone has different levels of energy/time, so don't feel like you *must* try to get a bingo by the end of Jan. I just figure there's not much point having a community if we don't actually do stuff here together, which is why I'll set nominal deadlines and then wrap things up.
As for SFW -- I'd say probably not, but it depends on your card. You can re-generate until you get a SFW one. The generators are word prompts (not images), and they do have things like "accidental sex", "tongue" and "turd in the wind" for the Symbrock one, and stuff like "Fuck or Die" and "... make us do it" for the fandom cliches.
The etiquette is that it's the honour system. If you think it fits the prompt you get to claim it. I encourage you to interpret the prompts as wildly as you like -- it makes for more inventive fanworks. For instance, "space" could be about Venom's backstory as an alien traveller, or it could be about Eddie needing personal space, or it could be about an event that happens to them in a public space or cyberspace, etc. Just make it clear in author's notes/tags as usual, especially if you've picked an esoteric interpretation for a particular prompt.
Most of all, have some fun with it. That's what these games are all about. :)

Date: 2019-01-15 03:18 pm (UTC)Nope, no minimum, as all genres are welcome, including drabbles and poetry, and non-verbal forms like icons and vids.
That said, if you get a bingo by writing three haiku or making three icons or giving three recs, people will probably give you a raspberry, unless they are very very good haiku, icons of enormous artistry, or recs with a lot of thoughtful discussion of why they are worth reading. It's the honour system. If it's a complete piece that you've worked on to fill the prompt, any form of fanwork counts.
We're here to have fun, and enable people with any level of energy and ability to take part.
